Are Your Pages Ready to Submit to the Directories?
Directories include: Yahoo, LookSmart, Open Directory Project, etc.
Directory ChecklistWhen all items are completed, you are ready to submit your site to the major directory indexes.
Follow these steps for successful directory submissions: 1
Give your site polish & finish
Make it fully functioning, logically-designed and give valuable content. Clear up any broken links. Eliminate or complete Under Construction areas. Don't submit temporary sites, link popularity lists, or doorway pages.2
Write a short title
Directories use titles to rank pages. 'Apple Stands' will come up ahead of 'Ted's Old Time Country Fresh Apple Stand,' in a search for 'Apple Stands.' Yahoo! requires your business name listed first and exactly as it appears on your Home page.3
Write a short description
Be accurate in telling what your site offers. Submission editors (real people) will check you out.4
Select an appropriate category
Editors may select an inappropriate placement for your site if your selection is too far a field.5
Submit your site yourself
You may get only one chance. Use it wisely; don't waste it on software or so-called specialists. Submitting to directories is easier than you think.6
Do as you are instructed
Carefully read the directions provided by the directories. Follow them closely or cancel your submission as they will take your money and not include you in their directory if you do not comply. They will not tell you why you were declined.7
Check & wait
Look for your URL in each directory. If you're not found, wait at least 2 weeks before re-submitting. A month may be even better. Be patient...
Main points to remember
- Do it yourself.
- Once your site complies with all of the above points, submit ASAP! It can take weeks to get in as a free listing.
- Your site should be completely functional and content rich.
- Yahoo no longer draws from Google's search engine. Read about the changes at Brent Winter's

Directories and search engines are different. Search engines use computer robots to rank web sites; directories use people to review sites and make placement decisions.
Directories generally have smaller and cleaner listings.
They say search engines like big, dumb, ugly pages. If so, the directories like fast, well-designed, pretty pages with smart content (articles, tutorials, etc.)
You might get away with spamming a search engine for a time; don't even consider fooling a directory. You may never get a second chance.
Yahoo!, LookSmart, and Open Directory Project (DMOZ.org) are the top directories.
Directory editors (real people) don't read HTML meta tags or calculate link popularity—they're only interest is in the page your visitors call up. Make your site fully functional, well-designed and provide valuable content to get listed.
Yahoo! is the hardest directory to get into and probably accepts only about 5% of all submissions, but since it is visited by more than 40 million visitors in the United States, keep trying.
MSN, AltaVista, iWon, and Yahoo use Inktomi's search engine it can take weeks before they update their lists unless you pay to get listed through Site Match
Site Match charges a $49 review fee and will check your page for spam before guaranteeing its inclusion.
AOL Search, Direct Hit, Netscape Search, HotBot, Google, Lycos draw from Open Directory for their directory functions. Open Directory offers free submissions.
'I bet you wonder if any of it is free. Ha ha ha ha ha!" says Dr. Bombay

Also some Search Engines are going as far as to create bidding wars between websites owners in prime catagories and placement within those catagories.
Search Engine Google is now the number one place people in the United States go to do their searching with 34% of the market and Yahoo 21% of the market with 40M+ visitors a month in the United States.
